Dividend Update – August 2017

Passive income report august 2017

August has just flown by! It has been an awesome month for me! First off, I was able to take a nice long weekend off and go out of town for a mini vacation. Then a week later, I took an entire week off for a full vacation. That combined with a Monday off for the holiday, gave me 10 days straight off of work including the weekends! I don’t think I have ever been able to pull something like this off ever. On vacation I was able to also cross off a few bucket list items. Going to New York City was the first. Lots to see and do there for sure, just wish I had more time.

Secondly, I was able to attend a few sessions of the US Open! That is a dream for any tennis fan to be able to attend any of the four majors. I even made it on TV during one match! My friend sent me a text during one of the matches and pointed me out behind one of the players on a change over. So I’m kind of famous and a big deal now, haha just kidding. While this month did cost me more money than I am used to spending, it was well worth it. The journey is half the fun right? This month is exactly what I needed to relax and recharge from life. No one wants to get burnt out. But the best part is, while I was out having fun, my dividends were still working hard for me. So on that note, let’s dive into the dividends!

Dividends

T– $23.00

HCP– $18.84

NNN – $13.79

GIS – $12.38

HRL – $5.13

O – $3.40

LTC – $3.23

August dividends, add up to $79.77 which represents a 24% increase from last year where I made $64.33. Below are some charts from my portfolio page to better visualize the results.

August 2017 Monthly Dividends

I am pretty excited about my August totals because I set a new record for myself. Not a monthly dividend record, but total amount of companies paying me dividends in a single month. As you can see from above, I have 7 companies paying me dividends. This is partly because of my last two recent buys of O and LTC. Both of these REITs pay dividends monthly, so they should compound nicely over time and increase each month’s dividends moving forward.

LTC is actually a new purchase I made earlier this month. You can see all the details here of that trade. So not only was I able to add a new position to my portfolio, it has already paid out once! Hope to see it continue to pay out for the long term.

Lastly, as you can see from the chart below, I am within about $20 of my 2016 dividends collected. So I will easily break that this month, especially it being the end of a quarter. Then it’s crunch time till the end of the year to try and achieve my goals by year end.

August 2017 Year Dividends

How did your portfolio perform in August? Has anyone else hit any milestones this month? Have you beaten last year’s income yet? Is anyone else out there a tennis fan and has been watching? Has anyone ever been to the open or a major tournament? Any fun vacations planned coming up? Comments are always welcome below.

  1. Hi DD,
Great progress year over year! And it’s great that you were able to have time of your life in the meanwhile 🙂
I’m not a fan of tennis yet but we are planning to start playing it with my wife someday. I think it would be a better quality time than watching TV series on our sofa lol.
    Best Regards,

    1. Can’t say I don’t love binge watching Netflix. But sports are fun and exercise all in one so it works for me. Only get a few short months of summer until it gets cold, so I want to take full advantage of it. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Great work daze! Still making large YoY increases, which is probably the most important metric. August was nice for me as well but I’m looking forward most to SEP’s report! Take care and thanks as always for sharing!

    1. Thanks Dan. Growth is all we can ask for right? I see you have been killing it the past few months. I am also looking forward to September since it is a quarter ending month. Usually calls for big numbers. We will see how that goes.

  3. Well done Div Daze. 4 of your 7 companies also paid me dividends in August. It’s nice to see our portfolio so close in size and substance. And, you’re right, I am catching up to you! It’s also kind of nice to have a friendly rivalry going on. So, you’re officially on notice buddy, that one of my unwritten personal goals is to surpass the size of your portfolio :).

    1. Haha yeah I have a few of those that are gunning for me. With your last huge bonus and putting most of it into your portfolio, you are right on my tail already. I see you surpassing me within the next year to be honest. But I’ll make you work for it, don’t you worry haha.

  4. REITs are great for dividends! Congrats on the increase and a great month. I saw a Legg Mason Tennis classic game years ago in DC. It was a night match and was superfun. I need to get back into tennis – the playing part 🙂

    1. REITs are great, especially since their yields are so high and a few of them pay monthly. I believe 3 or 4 of the 7 companies that paid me this month were REITs. Playing is a lot of fun, wish I had more time to play as well. Of course, I use Fidelity. Think I may have mentioned that in an earlier post about market strategy and trading platforms.

    1. Thanks! Nice to see another tennis fan. I have only been to two tournaments but hope to expand that in the future sometime. Interesting with so many big names out for the rest of the season due to injury. It’s anyone’s game now to pull ahead in their absence. I appreciate you stopping by and commenting!

  5. Thanks for sharing your dividend income update, Dividend Daze!

Your time off sounds extremely refreshing. I always find myself wishing I had more time too. It’s cool that you got to attend a few sessions of the US Open. Although I’m not a huge tennis fan, I appreciate the sport and got to see a few matches of the Rogers Cup last year. That was a cool experience.

The best part is that your dividends kept paying you during your time off. Congrats on the 24% YOY increase! I’m looking forward to your next report when you reach your all-time high in dividends in a year.

In regards to my dividend income, August is one of my lower months, but I am continuing to make progress. Although I won’t be able to beat last years dividends, I will be able to post my first YOY increase in September.

Thanks for sharing! Take care 🙂

    1. Nice, you are the second one today that has been to the Rodgers Cup. That would be a cool experience. You are right, I actually haven’t realized that next month will be a new all time high. I just know it was going to be good because it is quarter ending. I am really excited now! haha. Looking forward to your September YoY increase post!

  6. Sounds like you had a very nice vacation or should I say vacations, good job pulling them off 🙂

The beauty of dividends is that they pay you even when you are on vacation, I had a great August as well for dividends.

Though, September is going to be even better as I have 27 companies paying me dividends this month, it’s like getting paid almost everyday of the month 🙂

I also have four dividend raises coming up in Sept from VZ, WPC, LMT, and MSFT.

The only downside this month is quarterly taxes due on 9/15, but overall a great month for dividends.

    1. Thank you, vacation was good to me. Love when my dividends work for me even when I am not. Even when we are sleeping. That is quite the list to pay you in one month! Can’t wait to see what kind of numbers you are pulling in with that. Any dividend increase also helps the cause. Hope more to come shortly. Thanks for the comment!

  7. Being on TV during the U.S. Open reminds me of Seinfeld when George was caught on TV getting all messy with ice cream. Jerry was dating the “BL.” Beautiful Lines woman, Kramer become the a “ballman.” Anyway, back to your great results! Solid names paying you, double digit year over year growth, the journey continues and your are right on course. Keep it up!

    1. Haha I know exactly what you are talking about. I actually had a similar conversation earlier this week with someone. Too funny. Glad I could “sweep” my dividend results from last year and have some nice gains. I appreciate your comment!

    1. Aw man, we could have met up for a drink or something! I did enjoy getting a chance to see the NYSE building, Wall St, Bull, etc. Nerded out a little bit, not gonna lie. I can see how NYC is a lot and you would need to get out every now and again. Thanks for commenting. I love having my money work for me even when I am not.

    1. Doesn’t matter when you break records as long as they are being broken right? October still gives you plenty of time to make things happen by the end of the year and set that bar higher. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  8. Hi Dividend Daze. Great month! A 24% increase year over year is also really nice. I haven’t watched any of the US open games, but I do love tennis (have played it for several years). I definetely want to go to one of the grand slam tournaments one day. Probably Wimbledon or Roland Garros since those 2 are closest to me :).

    1. Nice to see another fellow tennis fan. Those would be awesome to go to! They are all on my list, but may take a while to get a chance to attend. You will have to give me some pointers if you go before me haha. I am happy with the 24% increase. Shows I am headed in the right direction. Hope to see you around the site more often.

    1. Nice being a fellow shareholder with you. I really like those monthly paying REITS like O so far. They should help us set new records every coming month. Thanks for your comment!

    1. It’s so close I can feel it! Probably break that within the next week or so as soon as dividends start rolling in. Always excited to break records. Probably going to be a lot of records broke since it’s a quarter ending month as well. We will see what happens I guess right?

    1. Thank you! I appreciate the comment. I am excited to break last years record soon. Think I still have 2 or 3 records left in me this year somehow to break. Gotta love compounding!

  9. Congratulations on your achievements! Keep it up! Much continued success to you and keep playing tennis, great exercise for all ages. I’ll be tuned in to the Semi Finals today and the Finals this weekend. Go USA for the women and I’m drawn between Nadal and del Potro.

    1. Thanks! Yes, looking forward to the matches tonight as well as all the ones going into finals weekend. The women’s final should be really great to watch as well as the the Nadal and Del Potro match!

  10. Well done!

I’ve been to NYC before. I saw “Annie” it was a great broadway show. The food scene was so so, Time Square is a “mehh”. I think all the movies and TV shows really hyped up Manhantan for nothing. hhiiih… But everyone needs to cross it off from their bucketlist, and so did I. hahah

    Cheers!

    1. I agree. Only tourists go to Time Square really now. It looks bigger on TV. The food is good but you have to know where to go for it. It was definitely an experience that everyone should have at one point. Glad I was able to go finally, was a good time. Thanks for your input.

  11. Woah – a great month of dividends AND getting to attend the US Open? That is amazing. My Aunt has gone to the US Open many times and she always talks about how much she enjoyed her time there. Did you print out a picture of you on TV and frame it for your place haha

Hopefully you will find September as fun and successful as August

    1. Yeah it was for sure a great time! Glad I was able to go. I haven’t got around to printing out the picture, but it was pretty funny. Hard to have quite as much fun as August, but I’m sure September will be awesome in its own ways. Quarter ending month lets go!

    1. That is funny you watch it even though you don’t really care about the sport too much. I can see how that is a huge event. That is on my bucket list as well, but takes a little more planning to achieve. I love seeing my money make me more money passively. That is the goal right? Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

    1. Thanks! Still plenty of year left to make up some ground. I agree 2018 is going to be even better. I appreciate the comment!

    1. Thanks for the comment! I am happy with the results. This month should be even better! I like seeing a few companies we share pay us both.

  12. Jealous that you got to see the US open! Very decent month dividend wise for you, congratulations. We don’t have too many monthly dividend stocks in Australia – the most often we usually see is a quarterly dividend.

    1. I do love seeing those monthly payers. Even though I only own a small portion of them so far. They will build up in time. There aren’t that many around here either so don’t worry. Don’t know too much about the Australian market, but the yields seem to be very nice. And I really want to go to the Australian Open one day!

  13. The US open sounds like it was a lot of fun. It’s definitely worth it to do stuff like that every once in a while even if your expenses shoot up a bit for the month.

I like the y/y growth, seems like things are looking good here and will continue to trend up as long as you keep investing!

    1. Yeah I am still trying to recover from the expenses, but those should be caught up by this week. For sure worth the trip.

No complaints from this end. Everything seems to be moving along. Looking for ways to optimize my portfolio going into the end of the year here. We will see what happens! Thanks for the comment!

  14. Hey DD,

that 24% increase is awesome! Won’t be long and you hit the 3 figures… you said you have been in NewYork, that’s funny cause i have been there too in September. It was US Open time, but i couldn’t get any tickets in the second week on Tuesday, but it was ok for me…all in all it was an amazing trip and the City impressed me.

If you have the time you can read my blog post about it:

    1. That is the hope. Would be nice to consistently hit the 3 figure mark every month. Wow small world, that is awesome you went their too. Yeah it’s hard to get tickets the farther into the tournament they go. I only went for the first few days. Always a great time, would go back but prob not any time soon. Thanks for the comment. Glad you had a good time in NY as well! Pictures look great.

    1. Thanks! It is amazing there. The atmosphere and the people as well the level of play. Hope I can make it back one day. Nice you can try to get there every year for it. Thanks for the comment. Hope to see you around the site more often!

  15. I don’t think you need me to come along and tell you how awesome you are doing but those are some serious names generating you some amazing income. I’m really enjoying the growth that you are seeing YOY also! Keep it up and I can’t wait to see you break LY dividend income!

    1. I don’t know how your comment slipped through the cracks. But glad I see it now that I am about to post September’s dividends haha. Thanks man, I appreciate the comment. Just trying to stay on pace with you.
